KRISHNA · PURANA

When Sudama met Krishna

Krishna welcomed his childhood friend Sudama with love, showing that devotion is never measured by wealth or status.

A simple journey

Sudama lived a life of great simplicity, yet he carried a deep friendship with Krishna from their childhood days of learning together. At the request of his wife, he set out for Dwarka with a small bundle of beaten rice, unsure whether he should ask his royal friend for help.

A welcome without measure

When Krishna saw Sudama approaching, he rose quickly and embraced him. He welcomed Sudama with tenderness, washed his feet, and delighted in the humble gift of rice. In that meeting, Sudama was not a poor visitor before a king; he was a beloved friend received with complete love.

What the story offers

The story of Sudama and Krishna is remembered as a lesson in friendship, dignity and devotion. It teaches that the divine sees the intention behind an offering, not its outward size, and that love can make even the smallest gift sacred.
