KRISHNA · PURANA

When Govardhan became a shelter

Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to protect Vrindavan from Indra’s storm, teaching humility, faith and care for nature.

A change in worship

The people of Vrindavan were preparing an offering for Indra, the deity associated with rain. Young Krishna invited them to honour instead Govardhan Hill, the cows, fields and community that directly sustained their lives. His question was not a rejection of reverence, but an invitation to see the sacred in the life-giving world close at hand.

The seven-day storm

Indra, angered by the change, sent heavy rain and a fearful storm over Vrindavan. Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger, and every person and animal gathered beneath it. For seven days the hill became a shelter, until Indra’s pride softened and the storm came to an end.

What the story offers

Govardhan Puja remembers this moment with gratitude. The story asks us to care for land, food, animals and one another. It also reminds us that true strength does not need pride; it protects.
