Shiva brings Ganga to Earth
Shiva received Ganga in his matted locks and released her gently, guiding immense power with compassion.
Bhagiratha’s prayer
King Bhagiratha performed deep penance so that the sacred river Ganga might descend to Earth and bring peace to his ancestors. His prayer was answered, but Ganga’s celestial force was so immense that the Earth could not safely receive her fall.
Shiva’s compassion
Lord Shiva offered to receive Ganga in his matted locks. Her tremendous descent was caught and calmed there; Shiva then released her in gentle streams so that she could nourish the land. This is why Shiva is revered as Gangadhara, bearer of Ganga.
A river of grace
The tale is remembered whenever Ganga is honoured as a mother and life-giving river. It teaches that compassion does not suppress power—it guides power so it can serve life.
