Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Darshan timings

Temple: 4:00 AM–11:00 PM. General darshan pauses for scheduled aartis. Arrive with extra time for security, footwear storage, and the natural flow of devotees. Morning and evening aartis are especially meaningful, but schedules can change on festival days, during special pujas, or because of local arrangements.

How to reach

Fly or take a train to Varanasi, then use a local auto-rickshaw, taxi or e-rickshaw to the temple corridor.

Best time to visit

October to March is more comfortable. For a quieter darshan, arrive early in the morning on a non-festival day.

Temple history

The present temple was built by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780, after the shrine had been rebuilt many times across its long history. Its living history is not only found in the building itself, but also in the generations of pilgrims, priests, artisans, and local families who have kept worship and remembrance alive through changing times.

Sacred story

The shrine enshrines Vishweshwara, Lord Shiva as the Lord of Kashi. Hindu tradition holds that Shiva grants liberation to those who die in Kashi. For devotees, this tradition is more than a remembered event. It offers a way to reflect on devotion, courage, humility, and the divine presence that guides a person through both ordinary life and difficult moments.

Why it matters

It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and stands beside the sacred Ganga in one of Hinduism’s oldest living cities. A visit is often experienced as both an outer journey and an inner pause. Many pilgrims come to offer prayer, listen quietly, receive darshan, and reconnect with the spiritual values carried by this sacred place.

Small planning details

Carry only essentials and check the official temple portal for security, locker and darshan guidance before leaving. Aartis and festival days affect queueing and darshan access; use the official portal before travelling. Carry water, dress modestly, and allow time for waiting and rest. Before travelling, check the official temple or local authority updates for weather, entry requirements, festival arrangements, and any changes to the day’s darshan schedule.
