How to reach
Travel to Sonprayag by road, then continue via the registered local transport route to Gaurikund, the starting point for the trek.
Best time to visit
Plan within the official yatra season, usually May to October. Clear morning weather is generally best for the journey.
Temple history
The stone shrine is traditionally linked with the Pandavas and Adi Shankaracharya. Its remote Himalayan setting has made it a revered yatra destination for centuries. Its living history is not only found in the building itself, but also in the generations of pilgrims, priests, artisans, and local families who have kept worship and remembrance alive through changing times.
Sacred story
After the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought Shiva’s forgiveness. Shiva is said to have appeared as a bull; his hump emerged at Kedarnath. For devotees, this tradition is more than a remembered event. It offers a way to reflect on devotion, courage, humility, and the divine presence that guides a person through both ordinary life and difficult moments.
Why it matters
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, set high in the Himalaya beside the Mandakini River. A visit is often experienced as both an outer journey and an inner pause. Many pilgrims come to offer prayer, listen quietly, receive darshan, and reconnect with the spiritual values carried by this sacred place.
Small planning details
Complete any required registration, carry warm layers and rain protection, and keep a weather buffer in your plan. This is a high-altitude pilgrimage. Check official yatra information for opening dates, weather, registration and darshan arrangements. Carry water, dress modestly, and allow time for waiting and rest. Before travelling, check the official temple or local authority updates for weather, entry requirements, festival arrangements, and any changes to the day’s darshan schedule.
